Summer in the City

The Rap Guide to Evolution is going strong off-Broadway with 52 performances in the past six weeks, and now we enter week seven with some awesome news: the run is being extended until at least the end of September, possibly longer. We haven’t been selling out the venue completely (summer is the slowest time for theatre in New York), but audiences have been building and reviews and buzz have been amazing, so we’re in it to win it. We even have a new TV ad featuring interviews with audience members and music and footage from the show. Click here to watch the trailer!

On the buzz front, we recently got promoted by Talib Kweli’s Blacksmith label, and Kweli himself gave the show a boost on Twitter, plus here’s an absolutely cracking review that just appeared on TotalTheatre.com and a nice interview with the European music magazine Electronic Beats.

The only really bad review we’ve had so far is from a crackpot promoter of cancer quackery (she actually uses the Disney cartoon Happy Feet as a scientific reference in her review) which in a way is reassuring.

Speaking of music, I’m writing this email from the Manhattan apartment I share with Jamie aka Mr. Simmonds, which also doubles as a recording studio. Jamie’s currently working on some sublime new beats for our next project, The Rap Guide to Business, due for release at the end of August. If you haven’t downloaded The Rap Guide to Evolution: Revised yet, you can now get it from iTunes, Bandcamp, Amazon (mail order) and most other digital stores.

Also in music news, Lit Fuse Records’ favorite latin soul singer Aaron Nazrul is now touring BC with his band The Boom Booms, and they’ve just completed an absolutely beautiful new record as well. You can now download Hot Rum! from the Lit Fuse Records Bandcamp site. Go on, give it a listen.

On the education front, we have a new music video now live on the Wellcome Trust sponsored teaching site www.RapGuidetoEvolution.co.uk. Check out the awesome video for Natural Selection, featuring a breakdancing Charles Darwin battling Sarah Palin, Michel Foucault, and “God” for supremacy on the intellectual dance floor. It took some make-up and costume magic to transform a London breakdance crew into our cast of characters, but the result is hilarious and sure to stir up some semi-serious discussion.

Finally, here’s a talk I did at TEDxEast in May, featuring the debut performances of Used To Be The Man and Don’t Sleep With Mean People.

‘Til next time, keep your happy feet moving on the dancefloor of ideas…
